Velez tram system 'needs more funding'

14 February 2008

The mayor of Velez-Malaga has requested more funding to extend the Costa del Sol city's tram system, it has emerged.

Mayor Francisco Delgado has asked the Junta de Andalucia to provide financial support so that the planned extension, which would add another 1.3 kilometres onto the tram network, can be completed.

Operated by the Travelsa firm, the Velez-Malaga tram system is the first of its kind in the region of Andalucia, Typically Spanish reports.

The Junta de Andalucia is encouraging Costa del Sol residents to make more use of public transport in a bid to make the area more environementally-friendly. A report recently published by the Innovation Office listed 120 proposals for saving energy in the region.

On the Costa Blanca, an underground tram line is being developed in Alicante to connect the Mercado Central station with the new station currently under construction at Luceros.

Work on the system began in November last year and is expected to be completed by Christmas, according to Typically Spanish.
